Why I signed up for the CrossFit Open…

If you’ve ever seen the CrossFit Games on ESPN, you know that it consists of the best athletes in the world.  Men and women compete for the title of “Fittest on Earth.”  I remember the very first time I tuned in, I watched {who I now know is} Annie Thorisdottir in amazement.  She looked pretty much exactly what I had envisioned the real life Wonder Woman to look like.  At the time, I had ZERO desire to put my body through what looked like hell on earth, but my curiosity was peaked.  How did this woman do it?

Each year the CrossFit games begins with an Open Invitational that gives everyone and anyone the opportunity to compete in 5 workouts over 5 weeks.  Last year I competed in my first CrossFit Open and I just signed up for my second year of Opens.

I'm signing up for the 2015 CrossFit open.

Will I make it to the CrossFit Games? No.

Will I make it to regionals?  No.

Might I score points to help my gym make it to regionals? No.

So why would a mediocre athlete like myself, sign up to compete?

In a nutshell, I think it makes me better, and not just a better athlete.  My CrossFit journey is about more than the whiteboard.  It’s about personal growth.  I want to be better tomorrow than I am today.

Last year, I watched a fellow CrossFit mom practice Double-Unders over and over until she learned how to do them for workout 14.1.

I had the opportunity to celebrate with another woman after she got her first ever chest-to-bar pull-up for workout 14.2.

I got to experience a room full of CrossFit athletes cheer me on for a 2 rep max PR {personal record} on my dead lift at 185 pounds in workout 14.3.

I can still feel the excitement that radiated through our gym when our best athletes got through the muscle-ups and back on the rower for 14.4.

We ALL dug deep and {barely} survived to live and talk about 14.5, but we made it.

The CrossFit Opens gave me an opportunity to do things I never did before.  I was nervous each and every week, but through it all I got to witness COMMUNITY at its VERY best.

This year the CrossFit Opens take place February 26th through March 30th.  You don’t have to be a member at a CrossFit gym to participate, and you can still register for the CrossFit Open here.  Visit us on Facebook or Instagram and let us know if you’re signed up!  We’d love to be a part of your CrossFit Open experience.
